Job Description
  • Reporting to the Supervisor of Drafting and under technical direction from Engineering the Mechanical Design Drafter, assumes the responsibility for layouts, models, and mechanical hardware drawings in support of development and product design.
  • Tasks include organization and planning of the number and types of drawings, part selection, parts lists generation, developing complex design layouts and related packaging support documentation.
  • The incumbent is responsible for performing Tolerance Analysis in conjunction with utilization of GD&T methodologies to meet both design, manufacturing, and inspection requirements.
  • The incumbent must also have a working knowledge of configuration management control of product design.
  • The incumbent will work closely with Design Engineering, developing their thoughts and sketches into layouts, drawings, and schematics.
  • He / She should be capable of spatial visualization developing conceptual designs leading to the creation of design layouts for exploring possible design approaches.
  • The incumbent will need the judgment to evaluate and present design alternatives, drawing knowledge from previous designs for incorporation into product and manufacturing ideas.
  • The Design Drafter may have the latitude to make design decisions based on the confidence earned from their respective engineer.
  • The incumbent will need to logically weigh these decisions and possess the judgment to know when to seek technical direction from the responsible Engineer.
  • At times it may be necessary for him/her to contact or participate in meetings with other disciplines to discuss design or fabrication requirements and feasibility.
  • This interface includes but is not limited to Design Engineering, Product Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Shop and Lab, and possibly outside vendors.
  • As part of this process, the Design Drafter may be involved as a member of concurrent product development teams.
  • He/She must be aware of design to cost, manufacturability, and feasibility of assembly.
  • The duties consist of participating in the graphical evolution of new products from layout to drawings including correctness of proportion, arrangement of internal components, necessary dimensional information and material and/or process suggestions.
  • The incumbent produces final drawings developed and dependent on 3D/Solid models working independently or in conjunction with others.
  • The design drafting process requires the incumbent to utilize the Client's (MCAD) System(s) (NX Preferably, Solidworks) to produce a variety of drawings and layouts to enable better visualization, clearance checks, and also provide manufacturing information for Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) operations.
  • Competent capability of the use of the Client's MCAD and PLM Systems is essential.
  • Associates degree in a Technical Field
  • Ideally experience and in-depth knowledge in utilization of NX Mcad design software is required.
  • Additionally experience using 3D Mcad software package ie: Solidworks is a plus.
  • Experiential knowledge of Teamcenter PLM is desirable as well.
