Reports to: Maintenance Superintendent

Purpose: Coordinate all activities within areas of direct and shared responsibility to assure the achievement of the production schedule, quality, product cost, and department expense goals.


Manage labor resources within the Maintenance department, including Maintenance Mechanics, Machine Cleaners and Tool Room Attendants to assure functional readiness and cleanliness of equipment to meet production requirements and safety standards.

Monitor effectiveness of processes and equipment. Make recommendations for continuous improvement as appropriate.

Effectively interface with peers on other shifts and departments to resolve conflicts, identify root cause of problems, and implement and document improvements.

Assure strict adherence to GMP, SOP, Allergen control, and HACCP requirements.

Oversee food safety tasks as required for foreign material control, sanitation, critical control point operation, GMP's and storage practices.

Oversee tasks as designated for implementation and maintenance of the SQF Food Safety systems.

Monitor production schedule and manage department resources, including labor and equipment, to assure adequate resources to achieve the production schedule. Participate in production scheduling and planning, as needed.

Perform employment functions including interviewing candidates for employment, conducting corrective action counseling, and monitoring pay for skills programs. Identify candidates for leadership development. Complete and review with employees their annual performance appraisal.

Maintain effective safe practices to reduce safety costs. Participate in accident investigation to identify and eliminate unsafe practices and conditions. Monitor department safety incident rates and make recommendations for preventing workplace injuries.

Conduct weekly communication meetings with employees to create positive, proactive communications and problem solving opportunities.

Conduct training and orientation of new employees including SOP's, GMP's, Allergen control, departmental safety guidelines, and proper operation of equipment

Monitor departmental performance to Key Results Areas including:
Units per minute by product
Timeliness of setups, startups and changeovers
% yield to production goals
Waste and outlet reduction
Completion of PM's per schedule
Reconciliation of parts and labor in MLS
  • Min. of 5 years supervisory experience in an industrial maintenance environment.
  • Formal technical training preferred.
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude. Must pass in-house mechanical aptitude test(s).
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
  • Knowledge in electrical up to 480 Volt VAC, Allen Bradley and Siemens PLC troubleshooting and repair, thorough understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic troubleshooting and repair, basic computer operations, lock out-tag out safety procedures, MIG and TIG welding, plumbing and refrigeration.
  • Familiarity with food processing environment and Good Manufacturing Practices preferred.
  • Self-starter who can work as team player.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all staff.
  • Willingness and availability to work overtime or on an emergency "on call basis as needed.
  • Excellent attendance record.
  • Must be able to communicate in English (read, write and converse) in order to receive written and verbal job and safety instructions, and comprehend hazardous material labeling.
