Awesome opportunity awaits you in Orange County, New York! One of the biggest and amazing projects that will impact our region is looking for their Health, Safety & Security Director from the conception of the Project until its final Operation.

Our client LEGOLAND New York, is currently seeking an experience Health, Safety and Security Director that will:

Main responsibilities PROJECT:
  1. Develop and leads the HSS strategy / plan for our client throughout project phases (primarily design, construction, handover), to ensure a successful and safe handover
  2. Ensure that designs for Park, Rides and Hotel undergo a HSS review(s) such that the end product is safe and fit for purpose
  3. Develop and monitors the plan for client assurance activities with respect to the construction works, in relation to personnel safety and quality of build
  4. Review arrangements for the handover process from Project to Operations, such that key HSS milestones are formally agreed by relevant parties
  5. Support the HSS Director to develop the plan for the formal “Merlin” HSS Pre Opening inspection
  6. Support the Project Team in the snagging process to ensure outstanding issues are addressed on a risk priority basis Operational
  7. Develop and manages the HSS training plan for all Merlin employees 
  8. As the ambassador for “Protecting the Magic” at our client, ensures this philosophy is embedded into the culture and core value of all our client Merlin team
  9. To design, deploy, manage and monitor a suitable and sufficient Health, Safety & Security (HSS) program across our client place.
  10. To provide proactive, visible and progressive functional leadership of the HSS agenda/program to our client.
  11. To embed HSS as a core value to deliver robust HSS standards, performance and a sustainable safety culture.
  12. To ensure effective governance and assurance of HSS, particularly with regards to engineering activities and ride operations.
  13. As a member of our client’s leadership team, actively participate in and contribute towards all areas of the business.
Main Responsibilities OPERATIONAL:
Business Impact/Results:
  1. Drives the HSS strategy for our client and sets the agenda/framework for continuous improvement.
  2. Provides strategic direction, guidance, coaching and development to our client senior management to enable the Resort to own and drive their HSS programs / improvements.
  3. Evaluates HSS risks for all our client activities and operations and develop controls to manage and reduce these risks.  Robustly audits compliance against such standards.
  4. Develops strategies and ideas alongside our client’s leadership team to reduce accident levels and improve safety performance.
  5. Develops and maintains an effective HSS risk assessment strategy and via an auditing program ensures that all risks are sufficiently identified and controlled. 
  6. Responsible for the development and drafting of new HSS standards, processes and procedures for our client.
  7. Responsible for undertaking cost/benefit and gap analysis as an integral element to the development and approval of new HSS standards and procedures.
  8. Undertakes impact assessments for any new HSS legislation and industry Codes of Practice / Standards where they could impact our client.
  9. Helps ensure alignment to relevant HSS regulations, and Internal Merlin, Japanese, ISO and other relevant management standards.
  10. Ensures the effective management of ride, fire and food risks (and other core risks) at our client’s in conjunction with other members of the leadership team.
  11. Drives the focus on safety culture in our client through the ‘Protecting the Magic’ campaign and initiatives which reinforce the Group’s HSS vision, strategy and culture.
  12. Provides relevant and meaningful Management Information on achievements of HSS objectives against agreed KPI’s to monitor progress against targeted improvements.
  13. Presenting and reporting upon HSS performance, issues and concepts at our client’s senior leaderships meetings.
  14. Proactively support the development and execution of Group-wide HSS programs and standards, as required, particularly as they relate to client’s details 
Required Qualifications: 
  1. Experience of managing HSS risk management during project phase is essential (design, construction, pre-operation)
  2. Good working knowledge of relevant occupational HSS standards and regulations (eg. OSHA, ASTM etc)
  3. Safety management experience working in theme parks, hospitality (hotel and/or food services), transportation or industrial settings.  Amusement ride experience is desirable. 
  4. A proven track record of influencing design for a positive safety outcome
  5. Familiar of handling safety risks on construction sites
  6. Experienced in delivering training
  7. Proven written and oral communication skills with the ability to articulate HSS processes to a range of people so as to influence others.  
  8. Able to handle multiple projects and quick to adapt and take on new initiatives. 
  9. Good attention to detail
  10. This HSS position is expected to develop and nurture positive relationships with all persons working to support the Project (internal & external).  This is vital to the overall success of this position.
  11. Able to critically challenge self and others to drive forward continuous improvement.  A solutions focused mind-set is crucial to this role.
  • 5 + years of safety related management experience in a theme park (or similar)
  • HSS qualifications eg. NEBOSH Certificates / Diploma, OSHA 30 Hour (construction and / or general industry), Bachelor’s degree in Health & Safety etc
  • Membership to recognized professional safety body eg. Tech IOSH / Grad ISOH (according to the IOSH framework), OHST / SMS / ASP (according to the BCSP framework.
  • Formal management training / qualification desirable.
