Responsibility / Job Description: 
SUMMARY: 
The Engineering Technician is primarily responsible for the development of main replacement design drawings in support of staff engineers. This position is located in San Jose, California.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Prepares construction drawings for water main installation using AutoCAD from a variety of sources including field surveys, title and deed information, project engineer’s field notes, existing as-built documents, GIS information and verbal instruction.
  • Supports utilities location research and verification including conducting field survey using a total station and/or perform GPS capture as necessary.
  • Travels to local districts, as needed, to collect existing utility and topographic information.
  • Communicates closely with Main Replacement Program Manager, engineer, and district staff on project scheduling and drawing status.
  • Communicates with consultants and outside agencies regarding project surveying, design and drawings.
  • Assists with standard drawings creation and revision.
  • Manages multiple projects and priorities.
  • Participates in and supports the Company’s Continuous Improvement program and projects.
  • Performs other similar duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associate degree or technical/vocational school certificate in Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CAD), civil engineering, computer science, or related field.
  • Four years of experience using recent versions (within last five years) of AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D or equivalent.
  • Experience with engineering drafting and design.
  • Knowledge of math, geometry, and algebra.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Valid California Driver License.
  • Knowledge of water and wastewater systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of legal description, easements and parcel maps preferred.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D in development of digital terrain modeling and plan and profile preferred.
  • Experience with conducting field topographic/site surveys using a total station preferred.
  • Experience with use of a handheld GPS unit, including data capture and post processing preferred.
