Job Description
  • The Upstream manufacturing team at Thermo Fisher Scientific (Austin) is responsible for the production and testing of various reagents for molecular biology and qPCR applications including master mixes, sequencing standards, USDA certified, and custom products. Our team is dynamic and fast paced, relying on teamwork, multitasking and communication within the team and the larger organization. We are seeking an energetic individual with strong communication, technical, and operational skills to join our team. The candidate will be a real-time PCR specialist in manufacturing and quality control testing. Candidate will follow SOPs and work in compliance with EH&S, SOX, ISO and any other required manufacturing or company systems (e.g. SAP, LIMS, Agile, Trackwise, etc.). Under indirect supervision, responsible for generating high quality products. Ability to identify and address quality issues and report to supervisor any possible deviation to approved processes. Ability to use and troubleshoot processes in daily duties. Directly involved in collateral activities such as kaizen, 5S, inventory management, cycle counting, etc. Adopt a positive attitude which contributes to a healthy work environment.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Experience with some common molecular procedures such as buffer and master mix formulation, RNA/DNA isolation, transcription, translation, restriction digestion, transformation, PCR/RT-PCR, Real time PCR, and sequencing.
  • Perform in-process/final quality control testing and accurately document all results.
  • Perform lab calculations needed to make solutions from powder or from stock solutions.
  • Perform a dilution series to create a standard curve.
  • Pipette reproducibly.
  • Follow directions and instructions accurately.
  • Achieve high productivity while maintaining all quality standards.
  • Organize and prioritize work to ensure on-time delivery.
  • Regularly review and discuss your priorities with team and supervisor.
  • Accurate and reliable inventory management participation.
  • Use specialized instrumentation and software during the manufacturing process.
  • Critically think about the manufacturing process and suggest improvements to maintain high quality standards.
  • Actively participate in process improvement projects and PPI.
  • Work synergistically with peers from your own and other groups.
  • Train co-workers in the proper use of instrumentation, manufacturing processes, and manufacturing software.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet programs, presentation software, and e-mail.
  • Adherence to ISO guidelines and the Thermo Fisher Scientific quality policy.
  • Active participation in maintaining a safe, clean, and functional work environment.
  • Reliable and punctual attendance.
  • Responsible for the completion of all tasks assigned daily; this may require more than 40 hours in some work weeks.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Molecular Biology or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1-3 years of related post-undergraduate experience preferred.
