Job Description:  RN PICU
Position Responsibilities
PICU Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles.  Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Nurses provide care for children and adolescents with a wide range of ailments, from common childhood diseases to life-threatening illnesses. PICU patients are usually unstable and require constant monitoring and interventions. In addition to basic nursing care, responsibilities of PICU Nurses include (but are not limited to):
  • Provide round-the-clock Nursing care for children and adolescents up to age 17 with a wide range of ailments; monitor the progress and growth of the children under their care.
  • Provide age and culturally appropriate care to patients.
  • Consult and coordinate with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans; responsible for noting symptoms, health concerns, health improvements, as well as family concerns.
  • Monitor and provide nutritional assessment & specialized feedings; track urine output.
  • Change dressings; insert catheters; start IVs (both central venous and arterial); assist with the insertion or discontinuation of CV catheters, arterial lines, external ventricular drains, epidural catheters and endotracheal tubes.
  • Administer infusion therapy including IV fluids, antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, and electrolytes.
  • Monitor and adjust specialized equipment used on patients such as ventilators.
  • Prepare, administer and record prescribed medications; report adverse reactions to medications or treatments.
  • Monitor vital signs such as blood pressure, breathing and heart rate; initiate corrective action whenever the patient displays adverse symptomatology; communicate the patient’s condition to interdisciplinary care team.
  • Follow continuous cardiac and respiratory monitor readings, such as EKG tracings, O2 stats, CVP/arterial line waveforms, if applicable, and report any observed changes.
  • Analyze lab results.
  • Assist treating physician during examination, treatment, and procedures which can include life-saving situations.
  • Utilize analytical skills to provide efficient patient care to manage critical situations in a timely, safe manner; perform emergency procedures in addition to making routine observations and monitoring each patient's symptoms and progress. 
  • Instruct, educate and communicate with patient’s family in a compassionate manner to provide information about treatments, medical options and precautions; assist with meeting the educational, physical, psychological and spiritual needs of the family according to professional practice standards and institutional policies and procedures. 
  • Participate in discharge planning.
  • Record all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms.
  • Comply with protocols, procedures and safety policies of a health care facility.
 
Qualifications/Skills Requirements/Education/Licensure
  • 2 years of recent PICU experience required.
  • Registration and current RN licensure in good standing required.
  • Current basic cardiac life support (BLS) and pediatric advance life support (PALS) certifications required.
  • Knowledge of how to perform accurate drug dose calculations; knowledge of how to use and adjust complex and specialized equipment like ventilators and incubators.
  • Knowledge of medications and general health conditions.
  • Ability to provide culturally competent care with a strong focus on patient service, follow physician orders, and properly document medical information.
  • Basic computer proficiency inclusive of ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to facilitate communication with various members of the healthcare team, patients, and families; effective listening skills.
  • Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work.
  • Multilingual skills (beyond that of English) in languages appropriate to the patient populations served by the medical center preferred.
  • Relevant clinical experience and/or specialty, certification required for certain practice areas, e.g., enterstomal therapy, epidemiology, peri-operative areas.
  • Analytical ability to solve clinical nursing issues and conduct quality improvement research utilization projects.
  • Ability to effectively delegate appropriate patient care activities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills appropriate to the patient populations served.
  • Physical ability to meet the core job responsibilities in accordance with practice setting demands for the patient populations regularly served.
  • Ability to effectively manage stress due to critical issues related to patient care, changing organizational climate, and personnel issues.
  • Must adhere to HIPAA guidelines and maintain confidentiality regarding patient and Agency proprietary information.
 
RN PICU Minimum Requirements:
  • Current Florida Registered Nurse Licensure
  • 2 or more years of current experience in PICU nursing
  • Current BLS and PALS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Current Physical
  • Current PPD/TB
  • Current Flu Vaccination

Length of Assignment(s): 13 weeks or 26 weeks
