Mortgage Underwriter (Scient Federal Credit Union)

The focus of this role is to:

  • Interviews credit applicants to obtain additional information and/or documentation, if necessary, to underwrite the application.
  • Reviews loan and mortgage applications to determine general credit worthiness and the specific merits of requests for credit.
  • Analyzes the financial position of the applicant(s) to determine the affordability of the request for credit.
  • Explains alternatives for restructuring credit if a restructure will benefit the applicant(s) and provides counsel to applicants on credit related issues.
  • Approves, denies or counteroffers requests for credit within assigned lending limits and Credit Union policy.
  • Ensures correct completion of the adverse action notice for all denials and counteroffers.
  • Submits recommendations for action when the request for credit exceeds the limit of authority.
Ensures that all terms under which credit is extended including costs, repayment method/schedule and collateral requirements are within Credit Union policy, fully documented and understood by loan applicant.
  • Inputs information into credit origination systems and schedules and/or initiates credit disbursal.
  • Actively cross sells Credit Union services, informing members of services which may be of interest and/or benefit to them.
  • Provides feedback and coaching to improve the skills of employees who are conducting credit interviews.
  • Understands and knows Client underwriting guidelines.
  • Locks loan Rates for applicants and understands how to commit loans to Client, FHLB or the secondary market.
  • Insures all Loan Estimates are sent to each borrower within the federally prescribed timeframes.
  • Performs all functions from the time the application is taken through funding and post-closing that conform to all Federal, State and Local laws; including any and all regulatory regulations (NCUA).

Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college and two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
NMLS is required.
  • Excellent computer skills with accuracy and speed. High level of professionalism and the ability to handle stressful situations with the highest integrity.
  • Ability to analyze financial information.
  • Demonstrated teamwork, customer service and follow up skills.
  • 1 – 2 years prior Underwriting experience is required, real estate lending is preferred.
  • Prior experience in contract preparation / loan processing is a plus.
  • Strong communication and attention to detail skills.
