Senior Mortgage Loan Underwriter (Academy Mortgage Corporation)

Academy Mortgage Corporation is seeking an Underwriter to join our growing team.
Role
The Underwriter reviews, evaluates, and recommends approval or denial of mortgage loans applications, in compliance with company policy, and all applicable federal and state regulations and evaluates acceptability of loan to investors and recommends approval or rejection of the loan application in order to maximize organizational profit and minimize risk.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Reviews and evaluates information on mortgage loan documents to determine if borrower, property, and loan conditions meet company and government standards
  • Evaluates acceptability of loan to investors
  • Recommends approval or rejection of loan applications; if recommending rejection, escalates loan for a second review
  • Communicates decisions to loan officers and processors
  • Assembles documents in loan file, including acceptance or denial, and moves loan to closing
  • Train and develop the skills and abilities of other Underwriters
  • Ensures that company, federal, and state requirements are met throughout the underwriting process
  • Maintains a professional, courteous, and friendly atmosphere for all customers
Requirements
  • 3-5 years of underwriting experience. Encompass experience preferred.
  • A two year college degree, or completion of a specialized course of study at a business or trade school, or completion of a specialized and extensive in-house training or apprenticeship program
  • Extensive knowledge of Conv., FHA (DE), VA (SAR approved), and multiple investor guidelines
  • Basic word processing and computer skills are required; 10-key experience preferred
  • Courtesy, customer service, and tact are essential elements of this job; work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the organization for purposes of giving or obtaining information, building relationships, or soliciting cooperation
  • Requires effective communication with customers and/or other employees using common telecommunications equipment and computer equipment
  • Must be able to read, examine, and organize documents
  • May require the ability to sit, stand, and walk around for extended periods of time
  • May also require the ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Position will often be in a busy office environment: the ability to multitask and focus in this environment is essential
