Consumer Loan Underwriter I/II (USE Credit Union)

Consumer Loan Underwriter I/II: In accordance with established policies and procedures, originates consumer and real estate loans by reviewing and analyzing the credit-worthiness of loan applications. Orders credit bureau reports, makes direct credit inquiries, approves or denies credit requests, notifies dealers of loan decisions and assists in the cashing of approved loans. Responsible for producing a high volume of quality consumer/indirect/HELOC's and 2nd TD loans to achieve identified margin, as determined by management.
As a Consumer Loan Underwriter I/II, you will:
  • Develop and/or maintain Branch Lending personnel relationships. Communicate with branches to gather the required information for a credit application, explain loan/lease options, rates, terms, and collateral requirements.
  • Respond to member, branch personnel or modification inquires, explaining loan procedures; provide technical assistance concerning loan rates, terms and other related matters.
  • Approve/decline the loan/lease requests and communicate decision to internal/external customers.
  • Maintain telephone and in-house contact with branch/member or vendors to solve problems, such as mediating member-disputes, discussing applications, and contract rates.
  • Develop and/or maintain Dealer Lending account relationships. Communicate with dealers to gather the required information for a credit application, explain loan options, rates, terms, and collateral requirements.
  • Respond to dealer personnel or modification inquires, explain loan procedures; provide technical assistance concerning loan rates, terms and other related matters.
  • Approve/decline the loan requests and communicate decision to dealers.
  • Maintain telephone and in-house contact with dealer partners to solve problems, such as mediating branch/dealer/member-disputes, discusses applications, and contract rates.
  • Review and evaluate member loan applications in a timely manner, verify information, evaluate collateral and make decisions on loan approval or denial for all types of consumer loans, including second mortgages and Home Equity Credit Lines.
  • Evaluate real property title.
  • Order real property appraisals, review and determine appropriate property values for potential security on second mortgage loans.
  • Make outside visits to dealers to maintain and/or generate new relations.
  • May assist in the decision process on how to collect on problem accounts.
  • Adhere to company policy and procedure, complete annual compliance training, comply with business continuity and vendor management policy.
As an ideal candidate, you will have:
  • Three to five years combined credit union/banking experience in all areas of lending or equivalent experience to include loan processing and origination functions.
  • Must have underwriting experience in consumer and indirect loans.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of auto lending and credit regulations.
  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills and a high level of interpersonal skills to conduct negotiations with dealer personnel and solicit and maintain the dealer relationship.
  • Must have strong analytical abilities to conduct analysis of applicant's credit status and recommended alternatives where the analysis reveals an insufficient financial posture.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and Geometry.
  • Must possess applicable technology skills and demonstrated expertise. Ability to use Word for Windows, Excel and other Microsoft Office applications, as well as the ability to learn new applications quickly. Requires general knowledge of network and database use.
