MORTGAGE LOAN UNDERWRITER (Beneficial Bank)

The Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for underwriting and clearing conditions for FHA, VA and Conventional loans ensuring compliance with internal, investor and insurer guidelines. A thorough working knowledge of industry standard product, program and compliance underwriting guidelines is required. The Candidate must have a general understanding of the underwriting process and have the ability to effectively make credit decisions with minimal daily guidance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Responsible for accurate and consistent mortgage underwriting. Perform upfront and final loan approval. Ensures quality in underwriting mortgage loan files. Maintains Bank and investor standards for compliance to policies and guidelines.
  • Analyzes applicant's financial status, which at a minimum includes cash flow analysis on self-employed borrowers, rental income analysis, and determination of creditworthiness and property evaluation to determine feasibility of granting loan. Maintains a pipeline to the Bank's standard timelines. Reviews files upfront for initial credit decision based on Company's checklists and guidelines.
  • Communicates with Loan Officers on status and recommendations, maintains communications with processors and closers throughout the process. Recognizes when to escalate files and ask for assistance with more complex underwriting. Recommends final approval for sign off by senior underwriters or manager.
  • Maintains a comprehensive knowledge of underwriting guidelines and restrictions for conventional and government-insured loans. Understands and keeps informed of regulatory changes and current compliance practices with regards to mortgage lending. Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications, participating in professional organizations.

Required Experience
  • Minimum of three to five years mortgage underwriting experience. Knowledge of investor guidelines and the delivery process. Ability to calculate mortgage ratios.
  • General Microsoft Office, Desktop Underwriter, prior knowledge of MortgageBot/ Avista preferred but not required.
