Position Description
FHA, Conventional, USDA, Client, and VA Loan experience required. Applicants must be well versed with current demonstrated experience in Encompass and paperless underwriting technology.
Major Areas of Responsibility
  • Review and evaluate loan applications and property appraisals to make a loan decision
  • Ability to apply a variety of mortgage concepts, practices, guidelines, and procedures
  • Maintain a pipeline of loans with an emphasis on customer service, quality, accuracy, and efficiency
Primary Objectives
Staff underwriters have the following primary objectives:
  • Review and evaluate loan applications and property appraisals to make a loan decision
  • Communicate with the loan originators and processors regarding loan status, approvals, suspensions, denials, and conditions
  • Maintain a pipeline of loans adhering to posted service level agreements
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The job requirements, education, and experience include the following:
Job Requirements
  • Must have demonstrated underwriting experience in FHA & Conventional Loans (don't apply without it). USDA and VA loan underwriting experience a plus.
  • Experience reviewing loans for compliance with applicable federal and state laws
  • Demonstrated ability to work on paperless loans. Proven experience in maintaining status and information within DataTrac/DocuTrac and Mortgage Dashboard systems, updating notes, status dates, and loan information for reporting as needed.
  • Broad knowledge and experience with loan programs guidelines and periodic updates
  • Demonstrated ability to review documents needed to clear approval conditions
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain communication between the underwriting team and management
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a demanding, fast paced, team oriented setting
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements, including but not limited to Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA)-Regulation X, Truth-in-Lending Act (TILA)-Regulation Z, and so on
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word and Outlook, and other mortgage software systems
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organization skills
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required, college work or degree preferred
  • Five or more years of mortgage underwriting experience in a retail mortgage lending environment
  • Hold FHA approval as a Direct Endorsement (DE) underwriter
  • At least three years of underwriting FHA and VA loans
