Lead Histology Technician

We are seeking a lead histology technician to serve as liaison and assistant to the director of histology. This position will include technical, troubleshooting, scheduling, and employee management responsibilities (scheduling and training but not performance evaluation and appraisal).

Responsibilities:
  • Retains all of the responsibilities of a histology technician including grossing, processing, cutting, embedding and staining of slides. Proficiency in all of these areas is required.
  • Responsible for coordinating employee schedules, including vacation time and adjusting schedules if the workload and acquisition of new accounts mandates such an adjustment.
  • Troubleshoots problems with staining and processing systems. Ensures high quality output of all testing modalities. Understanding of the technical aspects of the staining procedures including immunohistochemistry, ISH, H&E, Wright and other special stains. If this skill is not current, independent learning and acquisition of these skills would be expected.
  • Interaction with vendors for maintenance and troubleshooting of instruments and possible acquisition of new equipment.
  • Development and implementation of new testing modalities such as digital pathology and cytology. (in collaboration with AP director)
  • Stays abreast with the advancement of the technology and testing.
  • Ensures all equipment is maintained regularly per manufacturers recommendations and internal approved procedures.
  • Training of new employees and Insures all employees are compliant with the mandatory trainings
  • Acts as a resource to internal and external customers
  • Ensures that the histology department is CAP ready at all times (in collaboration with AP director)
  • Participates in quality assurance meetings

Requirements:
  • Minimum of an Associate Degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or B. Education and training equivalent to the above which includes at least 60 credit hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that at a minimum include either 1) 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses or 2) 24 semester hours of science courses that include
    • Six semester ours of chemistry b. Six semester hours of biology and c. Twelve semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination and C. Have laboratory training that includes either of the following 1) Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS (This training may be include in the 60 semester hours included above 2) At least 3 months documented laboratory training in histology
  • At least three years of experience in clinical laboratory or histolog
  • HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) Certification is required
