IHC Laboratory Supervisor

The IHC Laboratory Supervisor will supervise a high-performance team of Histotechnicians and Lab Aides for a growing anatomic pathology laboratory. This position ensures that all quality and turnaround time standards are met for immunohistochemical studies. Responsibilities include ensuring the area is performing at the level it should be, meeting all goals, and the quality of results being reported are at the appropriate level meeting all necessary Quality Control (QC) guidelines. They troubleshoot any problems with assays, work with their team to resolve any professional conflicts, they track all employee hours, and schedule employee's time. They work with upper management to ensure all policies and procedures are carried out, and that their unit meets all necessary regulatory guidelines.

Responsibilities:
  • Provides oversight for IHC staining and special staining.
  • Provides oversight for slide/block file room, reference testing specimen send-out, and ordering and receiving supplies for the laboratory.
  • Oversees daily IHC laboratory operations on each shift to ensure that quality standards and turnaround time are met.
  • Maintains quality control standards within CAP and CLIA guidelines.
  • Performs personnel performance reviews and coaching.
  • Responsible for scheduling employees.
  • Maintains established performance and production standards.
  • Maintains responsibility for providing daily supervision of testing performance by employees.
  • Assures that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Provide orientation to all testing employees.
  • Evaluates the competency of all IHC personnel and assures that the employees maintain their competency to perform test procedures. The procedures for evaluation of the competency of the employees must include, but are not limited to:
    • Direct observations of routine patient test performance, including patient preparation, if applicable, specimen handling, processing, and testing;
    • Monitoring the recording of reporting test results;
    • Review of intermediate test results or worksheets, quality control records, proficiency testing results, and preventative maintenance records;
  • Direct observation of performance of instrument maintenance and function checks;
    • Assessment of test performance through testing previously analyzed samples, internal blind testing samples or external proficiency testing samples; and
  • Assessment of problem-solving skills.
  • Assists as needed to perform other related duties and special projects as required.
  • Accepts other duties as assigned.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Three to five years' experience in an anatomical pathology laboratory; two plus years' experience in IHC; two plus years' experience in a supervisory capacity.
  • HT/HTL (ASCP) certification.
  • Routine histology including specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, and immunohistochemistry.
