Associate Scientific Director - Immunology

SUMMARY:
The Associate Scientific Director Immunology works under the supervision and guidance of the Scientific Director of Immunology and in conjunction with the Director of Clinical Operations, Specialty Laboratories, to ensure the effective administration, coordination and communication of all business, technical and clinical aspects of the Immunology laboratory operations. This role is responsible for managing personnel and administrative activities of the Immunology laboratory and assists the Scientific Director in the technical and quality activities of the Immunology laboratory. This individual will also be responsible for recording and reporting test results promptly, accurately and proficiently, and for assuring compliance with all applicable regulations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Under the supervision of the Scientific Director of the Immunology Laboratory, reviews and signs out clinical reports
  • Oversees the administrative operations of the immunology laboratory.
  • Assists in the design and implementation of the development of assays critical to corporate strategies and client requirements. Assists in the selection of test methodologies that are appropriate for clinical use. Investigates and assesses new technologies within designated discipline.
  • Collaborates with the Scientific Director, pathologists and other physicians on the medical necessity of planned assay development.
  • Serves as a consultant to management in long range corporate planning.
  • In the absence of the Scientific Director, halts casework, recalls reports, investigates nonconformance, instigates and documents review of corrective actions, reviews internal and external audit documents, and restarts casework in the event of problems reported by the quality manager, examiners, or technicians.
  • Assists in the evaluation and documentation of approval of all validations and methods used by the laboratory and proposes new or modified analytical procedures. Modifies and validates procedural changes as appropriate, in conjunction with the Scientific Director.
  • Reviews and approves the training, quality assurance, and proficiency testing programs.
  • Contributes to scientific research, literature to include grant writing, preparation of manuscripts for technical journals, and presentations at scientific meetings.
  • Assists in the development of product positioning, brand strategy and messages for new products.
  • In the absence of the Scientific Director, seeks appropriate approvals of immunology laboratory expenditures.
  • Writes and updates the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with the assistance of the Scientific Director and the quality manager and performs the annual review of the SOPs.
  • Assists in the preparation and management of written records of division performance, both financial and clinical.
  • Maintains library of relevant materials for employees. Teaches laboratory staff through lectures, journal club presentations and one on one and group education sessions.
  • May fulfill the function of section director/technical supervisor for regulatory requirements, as appropriate.
  • Effectively manages human resources functions such as hiring, training, mentoring and developing personnel; assumes responsibility for scheduling, performance evaluations and disciplinary actions. Develops an appropriate succession plan for divisions and assesses competency of staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Doctoral degree in appropriate discipline. Must be qualified to manage and direct the laboratory personnel and performance of laboratory testing in accordance with all accrediting bodies, such as CLIA, CAP, MD DOH, NY DOH, AABB as it applies to immunology testing.
