Anatomic Pathology Tech (Histotechnologist)

The Anatomic Pathology Technician II (Histotechnologist) reports to the Anatomic Pathology Supervisor and is responsible for performing simple to complex job tasks in the AP lab in a timely and efficient manner.

Key responsibilities/essential functions include:
Perform supportive duties, including slide consolidation, filling bulk fluids on IHC stainers, replenish instrument reagents, logging in cases for various departments, including chain of custody records, etc. Perform routine staining on various IHC platforms by following the established departmental protocols.
Read and understand all SOPs related to the department and adhere to all rules and protocols
Perform microtomy and tissue embedding on routine to complex tissues, such as fatty tissues, poorly fixed, etc.
Perform slide preparation according to SOP guidelines
Handle biological samples and potentially hazardous chemicals within EHS guidelines.
Operate ancillary equipment related to staining and microtomy functions. Operate vendor software for IHC stainers and internal LIS and workflow software
Communicates issues, as well as workflow related topics with management and peers when needed.
Identify any problems that may adversely affect performance of staining results and immediately notify the management team.
Perform QC for reagents and chemicals by using SOP's. Perform slide QC on routine cases, such as colon and breast panels.
Perform basic troubleshooting of errors associated with instrument failures
Prepare and maintain inventory of IHC antibodies
Maintain laboratory in a clean, functional state, as well as cleaning or performing scheduled equipment and instrument maintenance / calibration / certifications, as required.
Complete all necessary assigned training, including company and departmental based modules Adhere to department rules and protocols as well as company regulations and policies.
Other duties as assigned by Medical Laboratory Director or VP of Operations.

Quality Specific Goals:
1. Aware of and comply with the GEHC Quality Manual, Quality Management System, Quality Management Policy, Quality Goals, and applicable laws and regulations as they apply to this job type/position
2. Complete all planned Quality & Compliance training within the defined deadlines
3. Identify and report any quality or compliance concerns and take immediate corrective action as required
4. Read and understand all SOPs related to discipline and adhere to all department rules and protocols
5. Need to perform simple to complex job tasks by following the established departmental protocols. This includes a wide range of tasks from unloading of instruments, cover slipping of slides, basic data entry, labeling slides, microtomy, embedding of tissue, performing basic IHC using autostainers, etc. Ability to perform microtomy on suboptimal samples like re-embedded material and poorly fixed samples. These tasks must be performed in a timely and efficient manner.
6. Intermediate understanding of workflow for all of AP. This includes processing, histology, IHC, and overall basic flow of cases from one point to another.

Qualifications:
1. High School Diploma or equivalent; AA, AS or minimum 2 year equivalent combination of education and lab experience preferred.
2. Minimum 2 years' experience in a Histology/IHC lab as a technician.
3. HT (ASCP), HTL (ASCP) or QIHC (ASCP) Certification.
4. Read and understand all SOPs related to discipline and adhere to all department rules and protocols
5. Need to perform simple to complex job tasks by following the established departmental protocols.
