Job Summary:
The Histology Technician performs and demonstrates proficiency and understanding of grossing the specimen, fixation, cutting, mounting on slides and staining of tissues for microscopic examination by the dermatopathologist.

Education: Requires Associate or Bachelor's degree in related field and completion of Histology Technician training course, with ASCP certification.

Experience: Previous work experience as a histotech preferred.

Other: Familiarity with laboratory environment helpful. This person must have knowledge of anatomy and tissue pathology, a high degree of judgment and accuracy, and the ability to function as a team player with good interpersonal skills.

The Histology Technician displays excellent customer service, communication and organizational skills and is able to multi-task, prioritize appropriately, and work well as part of a team. He/she responds positively to constructive criticism and direction from supervisors and is able to understand physician's instructions and know when to seek additional information or clarification. They demonstrate professional appearance and manners at all times and display a friendly, cheerful, tactful and polite demeanor, along with compassionate caring in dealing with others. The Histology Technician uses time productively and contributes to high levels of company operational efficiency and effectiveness. They are compliant with HIPAA, OSHA, and CLIA requirements.

Maintains ASCP certification

Reports to: Pathology Lab Team Leads and Lab Manager

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Accessioning and grossing the tissue which includes measuring, inking and cutting, and entering the information into the computer under the patient name.
  1. Processing and embedding tissues.
  1. Cutting the tissues on a microtome and mounting on slides for staining.
  1. H&E stains using an automated stainer or by hand.
  1. Special Stains using an automated stainer or by hand.
  1. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining using an automated stainer or by hand.
  1. Daily maintenance of all equipment.
  1. Routine filing of slides and blocks.
