The Senior Medical Technologist is responsible for independently performing and reporting general and/or specialized laboratory tests in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures, and for providing technical services and laboratory support information to staff and providers. This person functions as the lead when the department supervisor is not available.

• Performs laboratory tests and reports results with the appropriate documentation, in a timely, efficient and accurate manner in compliance with laboratory policies and procedures. Validates test results in the Laboratory Information System for accurate reports to be generated for physician review. In some instances, may enter data directly into the computer system.
• Performs all LIS functions relative to the scope of her/his responsibility to include worklists, outstanding reports, patient registration, etc.
• Performs quality control for all testing and assures that results meet established criteria before releasing test results. Recognizes factors that may affect measurements and results, and takes appropriate action.
• Reports low supply inventory to appropriate staff. Insures uninterrupted testing by informing appropriate personnel when supplies fall below par level.
• Recognizes instrument or equipment failures and evaluates problem. Takes appropriate action to troubleshoot or to contact internal or external individuals for corrective action.
• Prepares samples appropriately for testing. According to laboratory protocol prepares and labels stains, reagents, and stock solutions used in the processing of specimens. Maintains glassware and other materials necessary for the performance of clinical laboratory tests.
• May be required to operate a blood irradiator requiring FBI security clearance.
• May temporarily assume supervisory responsibility of section during the absence of the supervisor.
• May be assigned to function as the Scheduler and prepare monthly department work schedule under the oversight of the lab management team. Helps keep department overtime to a minimum.
• Scheduler will maintain daily, weekly and monthly assignments for the Technologist staff to ensure coverage in all locations with continual revisions as needed.
• Scheduler will make sure new hired technologists are scheduled to receive proper assistance and support in all lab areas until they are thoroughly trained and familiar with procedures, protocols and equipment.
• Responsible for training new employees.
• Assists supervisor in developing and implementing new procedures/instruments/processes

• Minimal Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related scientific field, additional specialty training or course study acknowledged.
• ASCP registry or equivalent registry
• Must be competent in 4 laboratory sections as a generalist.
• Requires knowledge of principles and practices of laboratory science and minimal computer skills.
