Location: Supervior's Office, National Forests in North Carolina

This 24-week program is a rigorous work and learning experience that provides exposure to the Forest Service, development and training opportunities, and the opportunity to make a lasting impression on generations to come. Participants will gain experience in archaeology and cultural resource management. Specific duties will include, but are not limited to:
  • Organize or directly perform inventory of areas
  • Conduct inventory of cultural resources
  • Interpret heritage and cultural resource areas
  • Analyze and photograph artifact findings
  • Prepare sites sketches as necessary
  • Search for and gather background information
  • Analyze data
  • Assist in ensuring integration with heritage and cultural resource activities and establishment of priorities
  • Provide advice on identification and management of heritage and cultural resources program
  • Develop immediate objectives
  • integrate with resource activities
  • Establish priorities
  • Conduct routine field reconnaissance searches in areas planned for such activities as timber harvesting, wildlife habitat improvement, road construction, and recreational development
  • Conduct field search
  • Identify and mark archeological sites
  • Develop contract specifications for heritage and cultural resource work
  • Assist in developing partnership agreements
  • Produce site and survey maps
  • Prepare recommendations to be incorporated in environmental analysis reports.
Degree Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree or higher in Archeology or Anthropology and have attended an archeological field school
Special Skills: Previous archeological field survey and excavation experience, pre contact/historic artifact recognition and analysis experience, GIS experience
$1,500 for Professional Development (travel, training, etc.)
$1,000/month Housing Stipend
