Position Description Maggie L Walker NHS (MAWA) is seeking a highly motivated, well-organized student to support its interpretation and education programs and assist with the site's signature youth outreach program, the Maggie L. Walker Summer Youth Leadership Institute.The intern's major project will be to collaborate with the Supervisory Park Ranger to plan, develop, implement and evaluate the Leadership Institute program along with a team of two experienced instructors and a high school student assistant. The intern will: assist with pre-program planning and arrangements; serve as mentor and assistant during the two-week institute; conduct post-program evaluation; and prepare an endof-season report to present to park management, partners, and stakeholders. The HBCUI intern’s contribution will be vital to ensure this is a rewarding experience for the youth participants.
Learning Goal  
Qualifications  Upper-level undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in history, public history, museum management, education, or work with youth • Excellent customer service and communications skills • Knowledge recordkeeping and spreadsheets • Desire to work with youth audiences • Experience in public speaking and visual and social media communications • Interest in interpretation, education, or museums • Knowledge of subject matter, including Reconstruction, Jim Crow, segregation and the early civil rights movement • Dependability and punctuality
Additional qualifications:
  • Must be currently enrolled or recent graduate of an accredited HBCU institution
  • Must be between 16 and 30years of age
  • Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
  • Must be able to pass a federal background check
  • Must be fully vaccinated 
Work Environment When the intern is onsite, work is primarily performed indoors with some duties outdoors such as staffing an outdoor contact station. The job may entail prolonged standing or walking, walking up and down stairs, and handling cash. The position will require the physical ability to work in all weather conditions and perform some light lifting (>50lbs).
Vehicle/License Requirement A personal vehicle is needed.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Compensation is at a rate of $15.00 per hour, 40 hours per week.
