 PROGRAM OVERVIEW
 
The need for preserving all of our nation's history has never been greater, we're counting on you! HBCUI (Historically Black Colleges and Universities Internship) Program is a 6 month/part-time experience brought to you by Greening Youth Foundation in partnership with the U.S. National Park Service. As a part of HBCUI, students from schools around the country are putting their unique skills and talents to work in preserving the contributions of African Americans to our nation's history and culture. Participants gain real world, on-the-job experience as they explore federal careers in the U.S. National Park Service.
 
POSITION OVERVIEW
 
Position Title Science Communication Intern
NPS Unit Name Natural Resources Stewardship and Science Directorate
Position Dates May 16- November 2021
Position Description  Use science communication to help tell the stories of the trailblazing women that continue to shape NPS conservation in order to give a voice to underrepresented groups, celebrate the diversity of women, and redefine what a scientist looks like. The digital media content you will create will showcase how their work protects the environment and how their successes are taking down barriers for other women. Opportunity includes graphic design, video editing, science writing, interviewing, storytelling, website development, social media creation, and opportunities to connect with scientists and communicators in the National Park Service.
Qualifications Required: Passionate about highlighting the work trailblazing women contribute to science. Coursework or degree in either science or communications. We would be happy to have someone with a science background that wants to do more science communication or someone with a communications background with an interest in science. Willingness and drive to learn new skills and software Strengths include patience with IT problems that arise, independent problem solver, creative, enjoys working with people, open-minded, can-do attitude. Able to take feedback and apply it to future work. Desired but not required: Experience using Adobe Premiere (logging, editing, color correction) and a willingness to learn. Experience with social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), posting, and tracking analytics. Experience with Adobe Illustrator or other graphic design programs (like Canva or Piktochart, etc.) to make data visualizations.
 
Additional qualifications:
  • Must be currently enrolled or recent graduate of an accredited HBCU institution
  • Must be between 16 and 35 years of age
  • Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
  • Must be able to pass a federal background check
Work Environment Virtual
Vehicle/License Requirement Other than standard proof of identity and American citizenship, no
driver's license is required for placement, although possession of a driver's license is helpful.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Compensation is at a rate of $16 hr/ 10-15 hours a week
