Public Affairs Specialist Intern

Location: Supervisor's Office, Daniel Boone National Forest

This 24-week program is a rigorous work and learning experience that provides exposure to the Forest Service, development and training opportunities, and the opportunity to make a lasting impression on generations to come. Participants will gain experience in public affairs. Specific duties will include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide public affairs support for conservation education/youth engagement, recreation, natural resources, engineering, and special forest products programs.
  • Work with employees and partners to write, edit, and distribute press releases, feature stories, web content, conservation education materials, and a wide range of other public communications products (including video).
  • Participate as a key member of the forest's social media users group, working closely with web manager to implement social media strategy.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with partner organizations; seeks opportunities to form new partnerships.
  • Work directly with other staff, partners, and media outlets to share information and stories, manage issues. Responds to information requests from the public and media.
Degree Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in subject relating to public affairs, ie: Journalism, communication, public administration. 
  • Also interested in candidates who have degrees related to USFS (forestry, wildlife, environmental education, recreation management etc.)
  • Strong skills in working with the public, writing and editing, and using various social media.
Special Skills:
  • Must have strong skills in working with the public, writing and editing, and using various social media.
  • Knowledge of written and oral communication principles, techniques and methods; analytical methods; and interpersonal relations practices.
  • Communications skills sufficient to explain and gather information. Skill sufficient for writing and editing news, feature, and quasi-technical articles.
Benefits:
$12/Hour 
$1,500 for Professional Development (travel, training, etc.)
$1,000/month Housing Stipend
