Integrated Recreation and Timber Forestry Technician Intern

Location: Glenwood Pedlar Ranger District, George Washington and Jefferson National Forests

This 24-week program is a rigorous work and learning experience that provides exposure to the Forest Service, development and training opportunities, and the opportunity to make a lasting impression on generations to come. Participants will gain experience in recreation and timber. Specific duties will include, but are not limited to:
  • Assure recreation sites and areas are operated and maintained in accordance with operation and maintenance plans
  • Serve as inspector for recreation area cleanup and maintenance contracts. Inspects recreation areas and areas of concentrated public use for compliance with the management plans and public health and safety requirements
  • Perform safety hazard analyses of public recreation use areas and takes or recommends corrective action
  • Clean both roadside and backcountry dispersed sites. Installs and maintains information boards, travel signs, regulatory signs, and other signs associated with recreation sites, travel management, and safety
  • Oversee the construction and maintenance of trails. Applies silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber
  • Bring to the attention of responsible individuals situations on the ground that are inconsistent with guidelines
  • Take and record tree measurements, assesses quality, and determines defect
  • Observe and report areas of possible archeological significance and sightings of sensitive, threatened, or endangered wildlife species
  • Participate in other aspects of resource management support work such as recreation, maintenance, silviculture, tree planting, etc.
Degree Requirements:
Associates or bachelors degree in recreation management, biological sciences, or natural resource management related fields.
Special Skills:
Interest in outdoor recreation management.  Helpful but not necessary are skills associated with recreation such as construction, knowledge of water systems, trails maintenance, etc. 
$1,500 for Professional Development (travel, training, etc.)
$1,000/month Housing Stipend
