Position Overview:

Location: Harriet Tubman National Historical Park
 
The intern will research, analyze, and interpret the story of the NPS owned Thompson Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, the church Harriet Tubman attended for 30 years and where she was buried from, as it relates to the local community and the larger church's role across the nation as the "Freedom Church. " The intern will investigate sources from archives to books, to artifacts, to interviewing Tubman descendants and past and current church parishioners in their research. Analyzing the intern's own perspectives, feelings, and questions about this park resource will serve as inspiration for the internship project and help inform the direction of the research.

Learning Goals: 

The intern will learn about the stand-up of a new national park and be an integral part of the development of the park's interpretive visitor experience. This internship will also offer an opportunity to develop research, public-speaking, and writing skills, and community partnership building, as well as management of the internship project to meet established goals.

Qualifications:
  • College senior of graduate student majoring in History, African American Studies, Museum Studies, or Anthropology
  • Must be between 16 and 35 years of age
  • Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
  • Must be able to pass a federal background check
Work Environment:

The park is located close to the center of the city of Auburn, NY. The walk to the city's main street is less than a mile through an historic, residential area. Located in the city center is Wegman's grocery store which also contains a pharmacy. The local hospital is within a mile of downtown. Auburn, NY experiences four distinct seasons. Fall and spring are usually mild and summers tend to be sunny, warm/hot, and humid.

Compensation and Benefits:
  • Compensation is at a rate of $15 per hour, 40 hours per week.
