The need for preserving all of our nation’s history has never been greater, and we’re counting on you! HBCUI (Historically Black Colleges and Universities Internship) is a 10-week summer experience brought to you by Greening Youth Foundation in partnership with the U.S. National Park Service. As a part of HBCUI, students from schools around the country are putting their unique skills and talents to work in preserving the contributions of African Americans to our nation’s history and culture. Participants gain real-world, on-the-job experience as they explore federal careers in the U.S. National Park Service.
Position Title Interpretation Intern
NPS Unit Name Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Park - Atlanta, GA
Position Dates May 25th – July 31st
Position Description The intern will tell the story of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to the visitors of the world-renowned Martin Luther King, Jr. NHP. Duties will include informal interpretation while working at the Park's Visitor Center and formal interpretation while working at the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, as well as formal interpretive tours of the Birth Home of Dr. King.
Learning Goals The intern will gain invaluable customer service experience that they can use in any professional environment. The intern will also learn strong public speaking skills and skills in historic research.
Qualifications Course work in history and public speaking is preferred. Prior work experience in customer service, either private sector and/or government, is also preferred. Relevant Educational Background/Majors: Education, Public History, Curatorial Studies, Museum Studies, Library Science, Liberal Arts, Sociology, Archeology, Parks, Recreation, and Tourism or related program.
Additional qualifications:
•          Must be currently enrolled or recent graduate of an accredited HBCU institution
•          Must be between 16 and 30 years of age
•          Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
•          Must be able to pass a federal background check
 Work Environment The park is located in downtown Atlanta with many cultural and social opportunities. Most work is performed in the field at the park's historic sites and the Visitor Center.
Vehicle/License Requirement A personal vehicle is not required for this position. A valid state driver's license is required to operate a government vehicle while conducting official government business.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Compensation is at a rate of $10 per hour, 40 hours per week.
