The need for preserving all of our nation's history has never been greater, and we're counting on you! HBCUI (Historically Black Colleges and Universities Internship) is a 10-week summer experience brought to you by Greening Youth Foundation in partnership with the U.S. National Park Service. As a part of HBCUI, students from schools around the country are putting their unique skills and talents to work in preserving the contributions of African Americans to our nation's history and culture. Participants gain real-world, on-the-job experience as they explore federal careers in the U.S. National Park Service.
 
POSITION OVERVIEW

 
Position Title Interpretation & Education Intern
NPS Unit Name Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park – Johnson City, TX
Position Dates May 25th – July 31st
Position Description
The HBCUI intern will work to expand the park's outreach and education program by planning, designing, developing, and implementing a new Junior Ranger program. Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park has an existing junior ranger program that needs to be revitalized and enhanced. A new Junior Ranger program should focus on fostering a sense of ownership and stewardship among young people for public lands, and natural and cultural resources through hands-on activities with park rangers, in addition to work booklets. The Junior Ranger program should augment, complement, and tie into the Every Kid Outdoors program. Developing a new Junior Ranger program will require the intern to:
  • Conduct research on educational methods.
  • Develop creative writing skills.
  • Utilize creative thinking to design ranger-led hands-on activities in the park's two districts that are both entertaining and educational for junior ranger participants.
  • Work with the park's interpretive media specialist to design the layout of a new Junior Ranger work booklet.
  • Work in Photoshop/InDesign to create the physical booklet.
  • Seek advice and input from park interpretive staff and supervisors.
  • Coordinate a "Junior Ranger Day” to unveil the new Junior Ranger program to the public and park staff.
  • Practice time management.
The HBCUI intern will also develop and conduct interpretive programs at the LBJ Ranch and Boyhood Home:
  • Conduct historical research through both primary and secondary sources.
  • Write tour outlines with interpretive themes and goals.
  • Develop public speaking skills through conducting 30-minute guided tours of the Texas White House grounds and Boyhood Home. The intern will alternate between the two venues giving tours.
  • Practice group management. Keep the tour group together and moving with the intern.
  • Receive feedback on interpretive techniques through tour audits given by supervisory ranger.
  • Contribute to the park's social media outreach platforms: Post appropriate and informative items on the park's Junior Ranger program, while safeguarding minors in social media posts.
  • Follow US Department of Interior, National Park Service, and Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park social media policy and guidelines.
 Job Shadowing: Learn about the variety of careers in the National Park Service by spending approximately one day a week shadowing a staff member outside the interpretation division. Divisions or work centers include:
  • Administration, facilities maintenance, law enforcement, curatorial, and ranching (twice per some of the divisions during internship).
  • Meet various park stakeholders outside of park staff, including Friends of Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, Western National Parks Association, the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site, Johnson City Chamber of Commerce, and Fredericksburg Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Learning Goals The HBCU intern will be immersed in the field of interpretation and education during his or her internship. The intern will learn to leverage and create interpretive programs with goals and themes. They will be able to provide programs to a variety of audiences and improve their communication skills. The intern will learn how to craft quality, engaging programs for school children to foster stewardship and care of public lands and cultural resources. In addition to the focus on interpretive experience, the intern will shadow members of other park divisions for one-day experiences, learning about different career opportunities within the National Park Service.
Qualifications Interpretive and education interns are required to have strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong computer skills are necessary, i.e., Microsoft Office suite of applications. Knowledge of design programs such as Photoshop and InDesign is preferred. Experience working in customer service is preferred. An educational background in history, political science, environmental science, education, or a similar subject is preferred but not required. Experience in providing interpretive programs is preferred but not required. The park will provide interpretive training to all interns.
 
Additional qualifications:
•          Must be currently enrolled or recent graduate of an accredited HBCU institution
•          Must be between 16 and 30 years of age
•          Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
•          Must be able to pass a federal background check
 Work Environment The park headquarters is a modern building dating to 1969 that has been refurbished and renovated. It houses the administrative offices, main visitor center, an exercise room, a break area with a full kitchen, and a park research library. Work will be conducted both indoors and outdoors. The intern will split time between working at a desk and computer station, and on their feet conducting interpretation programs. The majority of the Texas White House complex interpretive program will occur outside. Boyhood Home programs occur outside and inside a historic building without climate control. Office and workspaces within both the Visitor Center/park headquarters and the Hangar / Pool House at the Texas White House are climate controlled. Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park is located in a rural area without public transportation. A vehicle is necessary for the 15-minute commute between the two park districts, and travel to surrounding towns for items not available in Johnson City.
Vehicle/License Requirement A personal vehicle is required for this site. A valid state driver's license is required to operate a government vehicle while conducting official government business.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Compensation is at a rate of $10 per hour, 40 hours per week.
  • Free housing for the intern is available in the park. We have four houses available, depending on the number of interns. Three of the four employee park houses are in Johnson City, with the fourth on the grounds of the LBJ Ranch district near Stonewall. The house may be shared; we strive to afford each intern a separate bedroom, but a shared bedroom may be necessary. Bathrooms are shared. All houses are fully furnished, have A/C, clothes washers and dryers, full kitchens that with utensils, plates, etc. Houses do not have internet, cable, or television. Internet is available at our park headquarters, across the street from three housing units in Johnson City.
