HBCUI PROGRAM OVERVIEW
 
The need for preserving all of our nation's history has never been greater, and we're counting on you! HBCUI (Historically Black Colleges and Universities Internship) is a 10-week summer experience brought to you by Greening Youth Foundation in partnership with the U.S. National Park Service. As a part of HBCUI, students from schools around the country are putting their unique skills and talents to work in preserving the contributions of African Americans to our nation's history and culture. Participants gain real-world, on-the-job experience as they explore federal careers in the U.S. National Park Service.
 
POSITION OVERVIEW
 
Position Title Youth Engagement Intern
NPS Unit Name Great Smoky Mountains National Park – Gatlinburg, TN
Position Dates May 25th – July 31st
Position Description The intern will be assisting with educational and recreational programs offered to urban youth through Boys and Girls Clubs, YWCA, Upward Bound, and other community summer groups. These programs are held in the park for elementary through high school-aged students. Examples of educational program offerings include; a focus on using the scientific method in the field with our on-going citizen science projects, related to issues such as water quality, air pollution, climate change, and active games that teach environmental concepts with a focus on the Boys and Girls Club Ultimate Journey curriculum. Recreational program offerings include; horseback riding, day hikes, and fly fishing. The intern will also assist and provide mentorship to our high school (ages 16-18) internship program. The high school intern program provides an opportunity for career awareness through hands-on experiences in resource management and resource education. The HBCU intern will provide support by going along on field days with the high school interns and a park ranger. Finally, the HBCU Intern will assist with our African American Experience Project. The goal of this project is to collect and share the untold stories of African American families who lived in the area of Great Smoky Mountains National Park before it was a national park. We are currently trying to collect oral histories/documentaries. The HBCU intern will assist our Ph.D. candidate in the summer research of this project.
Learning Goals
The intern will gain valuable experience that could help them focus on a future career path. They will be exposed to both environmental education with a focus on citizen science and field science. Past interns have said their experience helped them to have a more realistic view of fieldwork and careers within the NPS. Some of the new skills the intern will get to experience include:
  • Public speaking skills
  • Program development and presentation skills
  • Build extensive experience in teaching audiences from varying backgrounds about the park's natural and cultural resources.
  • Opportunities to work with other park divisions, including wildlife, fisheries, vegetation management, archaeology, interpretation, administration, trail maintenance, fire management, etc.
Qualifications Coursework in teaching methods and/or environmental science preferred. The intern should be comfortable talking in front of groups of people of varying ages and backgrounds levels. The intern should have an interest in working in an outdoor environment in a busy National Park. On the job training will be given in identification skills but must be okay working with live animals, including salamanders and terrestrial, aquatic invertebrates. Programs offered will include collecting data on plants, trees, and lichens, as well. The intern must be willing to undergo a background check since they will be working with youth.
 
Additional qualifications:
•          Must be currently enrolled or recent graduate of an accredited HBCU institution
•          Must be between 16 and 30 years of age
•          Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
•          Must be able to pass a federal background check
 Work Environment The intern will have a shared indoor working space with computer and phone access. The outdoor environment in the summer can be hot and humid.
Vehicle/License Requirement A personal vehicle is required for this site. A valid state driver's license is required to operate a government vehicle while conducting official government business.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Compensation is at a rate of $10 per hour, 40 hours per week.
  • Park housing is provided and is likely to be in a shared 2-bedroom apartment or 3-bedroom house. Depending onhousing demands, the intern might be in a shared room situation. All units are furnished and air-conditioned. Wi-fi is available in housing.
