The need for preserving all of our nation's history has never been greater, and we're counting on you! HBCUI (Historically Black Colleges and Universities Internship) is a 10-week summer experience brought to you by Greening Youth Foundation in partnership with the U.S. National Park Service. As a part of HBCUI, students from schools around the country are putting their unique skills and talents to work in preserving the contributions of African Americans to our nation's history and culture. Participants gain real-world, on-the-job experience as they explore federal careers in the U.S. National Park Service.

Position Title Interpretation, Education, and Cultural Resources Intern

Position Description HBCUI Interpretation, Education, and Cultural Resources Interns will perform multiple tasks, serving as both a front-line field representative of Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site and an integral member of the park's planning and research team. HBCUI Interpretation, Education, and Cultural Resources Interns will provide interpretation for visitors and facilitate enjoyment of the park by encouraging a sense of understanding, appreciation, and stewardship of resources. They will serve both in the park and the local community, at the visitor center, in the historic village, and on trails to provide interpretive services and educational opportunities for visitors. In addition, HBCUI interns will conduct much-needed research on African-American life and involvement Hopewell Village, mines, woods, furnace, and Underground Railroad. Interpretation, Education, and Cultural Resources interns will conduct cultural resources research and present both informal and formal programs for visitors of all ages including orientation talks and demonstrations. Hopewell Furnace is using existing community connections, as well as new opportunities, to expand its reach and accessibility to the diverse population in the region around the park. The intern will also play a role in maintaining and growing these links.
The HBCUI intern will also incorporate positive change by strengthening community engagement via social media promotion and outreach. The intern will be expected to serve as a member of the park-wide planning teams, to share ideas, provide feedback, and to offer support on the day of programs and events.
Learning Goals HBCUI intern will learn research skills that can be employed in many different fields, not limited to the natural or social sciences. Interns will gain interpersonal skills required to work successfully as a member of a team and gain significant experience supporting National Park Service research, operations, policies, and procedures. Visitor services skills will be honed through on-the-job coaching, mentoring, and training by National Park Service supervisory, cultural resources, and interpretive staff. The HBCUI Interpretation, Education, and Cultural Resources Intern will work in a variety of settings within the park and have an opportunity to connect with staff, volunteers, and interns who work in many disciplines. The intern will be expected to work as a member of our team and execute projects with staff, interns, and volunteers from every park branch. Examples of team-oriented projects include conducting historical research, special event planning, social media coordination, performing market research, assisting interpretive programming, and supporting volunteer recruitment and community engagement.
Qualifications The Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site management team seeks a highly flexible, motivated, and spirited candidate to help broaden our research, community engagement, and programming at the park. The candidate must have exceptional initiative and be driven to serve the National Park Service and the local community in a professional, conscientious manner. The applicant must be able to demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of people, possess exceptional organizational skills, and be ready to participate in all aspects of park programs. Relevant Educational Background/Majors: Education, Public History, Curatorial Studies, Museum Studies, Library Science, Liberal Arts, Sociology, Archeology, Parks, Recreation, and Tourism or related program.
Additional qualifications:
•          Must be currently enrolled or recent graduate of an accredited HBCU institution
•          Must be between 16 and 35 years of age
•          Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
•          Must be able to pass a federal background check
 Work Environment The park is in a semi-rural setting, about 5 miles south of Birdsboro, PA - a town of over 5000 containing grocery stores, essential services, and several houses of worship - and 15 miles south of Reading, PA. Reading is a city of about 88,000 people.  Shopping opportunities are abundant, and Reading has numerous vendors, business owners, and eateries specializing in international and ethnic cuisines as well as other cultural comforts and amenities. Public transportation is also available in the city via Berks Area Transportation Authority.
Vehicle/License Requirement The intern should have a personal vehicle and a valid state driver's license to operate a government vehicle while conducting official government business.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Compensation is at a rate of $10 per hour, 40 hours per week.
  • Park housing is available at no cost to the intern. Housing is located in the park about 200 yards from the visitor center. It is shared housing (1037 square feet), with up to 3 occupants maximum. It has modern amenities such as central heating and air conditioning, wi-fi, washer & dryer, DVD player, and UHF/VHF television. The house has a fully-equipped, furnished kitchen and two full bathrooms. Keys will be provided for the front door as well as an individual, private bedroom.
