The need for preserving all of our nation's history has never been greater, and we're counting on you! HBCUI (Historically Black Colleges and Universities Internship) is an 11-week summer experience brought to you by Greening Youth Foundation in partnership with the U.S. National Park Service. As a part of HBCUI, students from schools around the country are putting their unique skills and talents to work in preserving the contributions of African Americans to our nation's history and culture. Participants gain real-world, on-the-job experience as they explore federal careers in the U.S. National Park Service.

Direct Hiring Authority Resource Assistant The DHA Resource Assistant internship (DHA-RA) is a unique internship opportunity within the Department of the Interior (DOI). The objective is to build a pathway to employment in the DOI for exemplary students in higher education.  DHA-RA interns will apply content expertise to NPS management and build a network with federal employees throughout the internship. These rigorous internships require specialized expertise and typically are available to upper-level undergraduate or graduate students or recent graduates. The internships are designed to develop the participant's technical and creative thinking abilities, leadership skills, and problem-solving capabilities.  DHA-RA interns will receive a weekly stipend of $480, park-provided housing or a housing allowance, and paid travel expenses.  Successful completion of the internship does not guarantee that the participant will be hired into a federal position.

To be eligible for a DHA--RA Internship, applicants must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent legal resident ("green-card-holder”) and enrolled or within one year of graduating from an institution of higher education.   

DHA-RA interns who successfully complete the internship requirements become eligible for two years from the date of their degree to be non-competitively hired by the Department of Interior.
Position Description From its headquarters in Annapolis, Maryland, the National Park Service Chesapeake Bay Office manages the Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network, a partnership-based entity that connects people to experiences of the region's natural and cultural heritage, and also helps conserve important landscapes. This office also coordinates watershed-wide efforts to achieve land conservation, public access, and environmental literacy, and stewardship goals established under Executive Order 13508 (Protecting and Restoring the Chesapeake Bay Watershed) and the Chesapeake Bay Program. It is a true 21st Century partnership park that brings together many stakeholders in caring for the largest estuary in the United States, the Chesapeake Bay, and its watershed.
 
In a June 2019 survey of Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network partners, one of the needs most reported by respondents was help with fostering inclusive stewardship among diverse audiences. The Chesapeake Bay Program's mandate is to teach Environmental Literacy to every student within the watershed, regardless of background. Culture is often a barrier when environmental educators don't understand or represent the communities they wish to serve. The Chesapeake Bay Gateways and Watertrails Network seeks a DHA Resource Assistant to help develop a curriculum-based program for parks within the Chesapeake Bay watershed that would like to provide a Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience to districts with large black populations, including African Americans and black immigrant groups from Africa, South America, and the Caribbean. There has been renewed focus on the history of African descended people in the origins of the United States with the 1619 Anniversary and upcoming Semiquincentennial, especially within the Chesapeake. This is the perfect time to create educational programming that will both connect the story of African-descended people back to the Chesapeake Bay watershed and promote environmental stewardship within this community. The intern will create a culturally relevant and curriculum aligned program with the following deliverables:
  • Curriculum Review
  • Curriculum-based program report
  • Pilot with partner organization
  • Recommendations for a traveling exhibit, complimentary programming
  • Presentation to NPS interpretive staff and leadership
 This project will serve as the basis for NPS and partnership programming and initiatives.
Learning Goals The intern will learn to implement best practices in interdisciplinary curriculum design, science communication, public speaking, and interpretation. The assistant will practice cultural competency in educational programming and public engagement. It will be an opportunity for professional development as the assistant will apply academic skills to real-world issues.
Qualifications Skills: public speaking or customer service experience, research, interpersonal communication, writing, use of Microsoft Office suites Coursework: environmental or biological/life sciences, anthropology, public/applied history, African, African American, African Diaspora, or Africana Studies, education, Museum Studies, Historic Preservation, or related humanities or sciences
 
To be eligible for a DHA-RA Internship, participants must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent legal resident ("green-card-holder”) and currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or Ph.D. degree program at an accredited institution of higher education during the summer internship. Persons enrolled in a certificate program do not qualify for DHA positions.

Additional qualifications:
  • Must be currently enrolled or recent graduate of an accredited HBCU institution
  • Must be between 16 and 35 years of age
  • Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
  • Must be able to pass a federal background check
Work Environment The NPS Chesapeake Bay Office is conveniently located in the historic Eastport neighborhood of Annapolis, MD, where we enjoy beautiful river views. We are located less than a mile from downtown Annapolis with shops, restaurants, and entertainment, and less than two miles from several grocery options, including large scale grocery stores, international markets, farmers markets, and convenience stores. The office is handicap accessible and will include a work station that is accessible as well. There are cubicles and offices with large windows, a kitchen, and dedicated desks.
Vehicle/License Requirement A personal vehicle is required for this site. A valid state driver's license is required to operate a government vehicle while conducting official government business.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Compensation is at a rate of $12 per hour, 40 hours per week.
  • A housing assistance stipend will be provided for non-local interns.
