The need for preserving all of our nation's history has never been greater, and we're counting on you! HBCUI (Historically Black Colleges and Universities Internship) is an 11-week summer experience brought to you by Greening Youth Foundation in partnership with the U.S. National Park Service. As a part of HBCUI, students from schools around the country are putting their unique skills and talents to work in preserving the contributions of African Americans to our nation's history and culture. Participants gain real-world, on-the-job experience as they explore federal careers in the U.S. National Park Service.

Direct Hiring Authority Resource Assistant The DHA Resource Assistant internship (DHA-RA) is a unique internship opportunity within the Department of the Interior (DOI). The objective is to build a pathway to employment in the DOI for exemplary students in higher education.  DHA-RA interns will apply content expertise to NPS management and build a network with federal employees throughout the internship. These rigorous internships require specialized expertise and typically are available to upper-level undergraduate or graduate students or recent graduates. The internships are designed to develop the participant's technical and creative thinking abilities, leadership skills, and problem-solving capabilities.  DHA-RA interns will receive a weekly stipend of $480, park-provided housing or a housing allowance, and paid travel expenses.  Successful completion of the internship does not guarantee that the participant will be hired into a federal position.

To be eligible for a DHA--RA Internship, applicants must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent legal resident ("green-card-holder”) and enrolled or within one year of graduating from an institution of higher education.   
DHA-RA interns who successfully complete the internship requirements become eligible for two years from the date of their degree to be non-competitively hired by the Department of Interior.
Position Description The project will support the NPS, Region-1 efforts to commemorate 400 years of African American history, as part of the NPS national effort to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the landing of enslaved Africans in the English-occupied colonies at Point Comfort, Virginia, in 1619 and the Congressional establishment of the 400 Years of African American History Commission in 2018. This project will highlight critical stories of African American history throughout the region with a digital humanities project (Storymap, History Pin, etc) and social media, with a focus on expanding NPS ability to tell broader and more cohesive African American experience stories that connect to people and places beyond our national parks. This project builds on an earlier legal-history internship project, and the intern will carry the research forward with site identification, additional research, partnership coordination, and final presentation component. The deliverable will be shared with NPS regional staff, parks, and partners through an internal presentation, and presentation at professional conferences will also be encouraged.
Learning Goals The intern will learn how to conduct site identification studies across broad geographic scopes and themes, identify and recommend research needs, identify sites associated with historical themes, conduct evaluations of national significance and integrity. In addition, during the project, the intern will develop and hone project management skills as well as collaborative communication between the NPS and its partners and the public. They will gain experience in NPS regional implementation of cultural resource support to park units and external preservation programs.
Qualifications Graduate-level education in American history, with a focus on African American history, is needed. Experience with National Register/National Historic Landmark is preferred. Digital media/ social media skills will be required to implement presentation deliverables.
In order to be eligible for a DHA-RA Internship, participants must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent legal resident ("green-card-holder”) and currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or Ph.D. degree program at an accredited institution of higher education during the summer internship. Persons enrolled in a certificate program do not qualify for DHA positions.

Additional qualifications:
  • Must be currently enrolled or recent graduate of an accredited HBCU institution
  • Must be between 16 and 35 years of age
  • Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
  • Must be able to pass a federal background check
Work Environment The work environment will involve approximately 75% in the regional office at an assigned work location or nearby research facility (library/ archive) and 25% field-based work, mostly accompanied by regional staff. Fieldwork may involve surveying on foot up to eight miles and riding in a staff-driven vehicle to survey
locations for up to 6 hours.
Vehicle/License Requirement A personal vehicle is not required for this position.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Compensation is at a rate of $12 per hour, 40 hours per week.
