Data Scientist Intern
Ref No.: 18-00002
Location: Flexible, Georgia
Position Type:Intern
Start Date: 10/01/2018
This internship will provide exposure to the Forest Service, and opportunities in data science. The Forest Service creates a number of documents and reports in fulfilling its land use planning and NEPA responsibilities. Some of these documents are created during the planning or scoping phase, while others are done during implementation or post-plan monitoring. These documents have wide variations in content, format, geographic extent, length, depth/breadth, and other characteristics, which reflect the highly varied landscapes we manage and the authority we provide to our field line officers. The intern will be responsible for applying their technical knowledge of analytics to the types of Forest Service issues described above. The short-term goal of this internship is to develop proof-of-concept tools and products to aid in the evaluation of these approaches to meet long-term business case requirements for improving efficiencies in environmental analysis, monitoring, and decision making.

Major duties will include, but are not limited to:
  • Identifying commonalities, associations, and interactions of document topics and themes (e.g., fine-filter indicators such Canadian lynx or black-footed ferrets, and coarse filter-indicators such as longleaf pine ecosystems or old growth).
  • Automating (or semi-automating) analysis of internal forest management plans, including sentiment analysis.
  • Associating documents with their geospatial characteristics, including location, extent, and scale of relevance.
  • A doctoral degree (or equivalent combination of education and experience) in computer science (or related field), with an emphasis on NLP
  • Must have experience working with large amounts of unstructured data, and across various databases
  • Familiarity with developing and implementing text classification systems, using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA), User-Defined Dictionaries (UDD), etc., performing sentiment analysis, part-of-speech tagging methods
  • Must be comfortable working with Python
