Enterprise Architect

The Enterprise Architect is responsible for leading the program to develop, maintain, and leverage the enterprise architecture (EA) across the organization. The enterprise architect is also responsible for defining EA processes such as the EA assurance process and for leading the integration of these processes with other related business and IT processes.
This role reports to the Chief Technology Officer and leads all other architects from design authority perspective. Direct reports to this position may include enterprise business architects, enterprise information architects, enterprise technology architects and enterprise solution architects.

Responsibilities:

The Enterprise Architect is responsible for leading the program to develop, maintain, and leverage the enterprise architecture (EA) across the organization. The enterprise architect is also responsible for defining EA processes such as the EA assurance process and for leading the integration of these processes with other related business and IT processes.

This role reports to the Chief Technology Officer and leads all other architects from design authority perspective. Direct reports to this position may include enterprise business architects, enterprise information architects, enterprise technology architects and enterprise solution architects.
  • Leading the creation or evolution of the EA function or program, including the coordination of an appropriately balanced pursuit of enterprise business, information, technical and solution architecture viewpoints.
  • Understanding, advocating and supporting the enterprise's business and IT strategies
  • Leading the identification and analysis of enterprise business drivers to derive enterprise business, information, technical and solution architecture requirements; analyzing industry, technology and market trends to determine their potential impacts on the enterprise
  • Analyzing the current business and IT environment to detect critical deficiencies and recommend solutions for improvement
  • Leading and facilitating the creation of governing principles to guide solution decision making for the enterprise
  • Ensuring that the optimal governance structure and compliance activities (such as handling waivers) are associated with EA compliance
  • Leading the development of an implementation plan for the EA, based on business requirements and IT strategies; overseeing EA implementation, ongoing EA refinement activities, and the documentation of all EA design and analysis work
  • Consulting with program/project teams to fit solutions to architecture across all viewpoints
  • Identifying organizational requirements for the resources, structures and cultural changes necessary to support the EA
  • Promoting the EA process, outcomes and results to the organization, including the enterprise's IT and business leaders; this includes assessing (through appropriate metrics) and communicating the achievement and impact of the EA, as well as leading the development and execution of an EA communication and education plan
  • Leads the development of the enterprise architecture based on the optimal architectural framework (e.g. TOGAF, Zachman, FEA, or a hybrid of multiple frameworks). Creates and maintains domain, program and solution architecture.
  • Works with Solution Architects across the US, International, Corp. Services and other business segments to provide an enterprise solution that is scalable, adaptable and in synchrony with ever-changing business needs.
  • Closely interfaces with individual Solution Architects to percolate enterprise design principles, standards and methodologies as applicable to each solution. Facilitates the streamlining and integration of solutions into the overall architecture. Provides guidance to Solution Architects for defining and designing solutions.
  • Collaborates with individual Solution Architects to review the objectives and constraints of each solution and determine conformance with the overall enterprise architecture.
  • Works closely with Solution Architects to identify risks associated with implementing IT solutions and analyze potential impact on the enterprise, its architecture, and its achievement of scheduled objectives. Serves as the point of contact for escalations from Solution Architects pertaining to issues that impact enterprise architecture.
  • Continually strives for simplification of the enterprise architecture while integrating plans for new product development.
  • Facilitates the reuse of design objects. Promotes shared infrastructure and applications to reduce costs and improve information flow. Contributes to a reduction in IT complexity, enforcement of discipline and standardization of IT planning activities, consolidation of data and applications, and better interoperability of the systems.
  • Provides confirmation that new projects, technologies, and application are aligned to the enterprise architecture and associated technology roadmap.
  • Works with the Infrastructure Architect and Data Architect to identify and address architecture issues that may affect integrity of infrastructure, data or IT services.
  • Identifies and recommends areas appropriate for further study and participates in Proof of Concept projects required to thoroughly investigate architectural possibilities and their related business benefits.
Requirements:
  • Degree in business management, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, system analysis or a related field of study
  • Additional training or certification in organization change management highly desirable
  • In-depth knowledge of the Insurance business and a keen interest in technology trends, innovations and industry best practices
  • Previous experience as a successful enterprise architect highly desirable
  • Seven to 10 years of experience in at least two IT disciplines (such as technical architecture, solution architecture, network management, application development, middleware design, information analysis, database management or operations management) in a heterogeneous environment ' or five years of experience in solution architecture, business analysis or business strategic planning
  • Demonstrated track record of leading high-performance teams toward the successful attainment of challenging goals
  • Strong communication skills to be able to liaise effectively between IT and business stakeholders
  • An analytical mindset to understand how parts interact with each other and fit into the overall enterprise architecture and to be able to assess and prioritize alternatives
  • A sound understanding of software and project lifecycles. Experience with leading and delivering large-scale design and implementation projects and demonstrated strong project management skills while managing timelines, budget, resources and constraints.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of business re-engineering principles and processes.
  • Ability to translate business needs into EA requirements.
  • Ability to estimate the financial impact on QA alternatives.
  • Ability to apply multiple solutions to business problems.
  • Effectiveness in driving short-term actions that are consistent with long-term goals
  • Ability to remain neutral toward technology, vendor and product choices, as well as to be more interested in results than in personal preferences
