Job Description:
  • Responsible for designing and modeling databases, reviewing and approving database designs, solving complex database issues, recommending processes and tools for improving database efficiency and performance, and providing hardware recommendations and capacity planning for database servers and storage.

Essential Functions:
  • Technical Complete understanding of database management systems and tools used by Client and recommends innovative approaches to solving issues and improving existing processes.
  • Designs and models databases for Client-developed applications.
  • Models databases provided by third-party vendors and maintains data model documentation repository.
  • Reviews and approves databases designed by project teams.
  • Develops and maintains technical and naming standards for internally developed databases. • Recommends database tools that could benefit Client's projects.
  • Researches and prototypes approaches for improving database efficiency and performance; documents and rolls out successful approaches to the DBA team.
  • Recommends database server architecture requirements and works with the Infrastructure team on building database servers.
  • Determines database disk capacity and speed requirements and works with the Infrastructure team on implementation.
  • Tunes and troubleshoots databases and database applications.
  • Identifies database processes that can be automated and rolls out automation techniques to the DBA team. Leadership
  • Provides technical leadership and guidance to the DBA team and to project teams.
  • Assists DBAs with solving complex technical issues.
  • Establishes, documents, and rolls out database processes and procedures. Communication
  • Provides recommendations, alternatives, and guidance to management, DBAs, and project teams regarding database questions and issues.
  • Communicates effectively with a variety of audiences including management, DBAs, architects, analysts, and developers. Tailors the message to the audience.
  • Communicates database policies and procedures throughout Client, and enforce adherence to processes and procedures.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Advanced to expert level SQL Server 2008 design, administration and tuning skills
  • Data modeling experience
  • Experience with large databases up to 2 terabytes in size and a solid understanding of the effects of various factors on the health and performance of large, transactional SQL Server databases
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Solid understanding of HealthPAS architecture and processing and of how database architecture and design relates to larger project objectives
  • Self-motivated, takes initiative to identify, communicate, and resolve potential issues
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to abide by Client's policies
  • Ability to maintain attendance to support required quality and quantity to work
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective work relationships with coworkers, clients, members, providers and customers

Required Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree

Required Experience:
  • 8-10 years MS SQL Server 2005/2008 database administration experience in a production environment.
  • 8-10 years hands-on relational database experience, including database design, architecture and capacity planning experience.
