Job Function Summary:
Involves the design, building, testing, and implementation of clinical application systems in support of biomedical research. Provides support to clinical users through knowledge of clinical processes, documentation needs, workflows, and clinical practice standards, when adapting software to meet their needs. Works with clinicians to create or adapt written protocols. Prepares detailed specs encompassing clinical processes, information flow, risk and impact analysis. May provide customer service, troubleshooting, and maintenance.

Custom Scope:
The Research Solutions Architect, Clinical Solutions, has the overall responsibility for design and planning for complex, integrated or interoperated care delivery workflows. The incumbent will be responsible for defining application solutions for the clinical research areas of operations and the CTSI Informatics and Research Innovation (IRI) Program. The incumbent will foster and guide IT-enabled transformation initiatives to ensure application/data integrity while incorporating leading edge technology/functionality to support the organization.

The incumbent will develop tools/process to ensure the integrity of system master file build, security, clinical content, decision support algorithms, device integration, report writing and data extraction. The individual in this position will assess Client's Health & research strategies for development opportunities to further establish as a research & innovation hub. The incumbent will collaborate closely with and support the APeX-Epic application teams and research partners to develop innovative solutions for Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) Informatics and Research Innovation (IRI) Program initiatives. This support will include assistance with study design, strategy, build, implementation and reporting. Ensuring that client can efficiently implement research solutions is the main function of this role.

Department Overview:
Clinical Systems is responsible for all aspects of the Electronic Health Record (EPIC: APeX - Advancing Patient-Centered Excellence) for hospitals, practices, affiliates and community partners. The Research Solutions Architect will work in collaboration with the APeX-Epic application teams, clinical/business operations, and Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) colleagues to deliver innovative solutions for complex research projects. Provides excellent customer service to end users, tracks issues and follows-up as appropriate. The incumbent will work in multiple locations including Medical Center locations, Hospitals-Oakland and San Francisco, campus, and community connect partners.

Emerging technology is generating major new opportunities for innovation in clinical and translational research. The CTSI Informatics and Research Innovation (IRI) Program works with other partners across Client to make data more accessible and usable for research. In addition, and in specific:
  • We are working to enable the development of EHR-based interventions via clinical trials embedded within healthcare delivery systems for the purpose of generating scientific evidence while delivering healthcare (the learning health system).
  • We are focused on enabling efficient and compliant access to the EHR data, both identified and de-identified, for research.
  • We support the development of scalable, low cost infrastructure to enable investigators to engage directly with study participants.
  • We are working to develop and pilot a process for gaining informed consent electronically from patients so that their unused biological specimens can be used for precision medical research.

Plans, implements and supports clinical software, hardware, operating systems and / or distributed clinical information systems of moderate to significant scope and complexity in support of clinical and translational research.


Contributes to the development of new research projects at all levels of scope and complexity. Performs systems analysis, planning and preparation, coding, testing, implementation and client / vendor coordination.


Collaborates with key clinical users on complex projects to modify workflow due to research implementations. Plans and develops improvements in functionality and efficiency of research implementations.


Applies clinical applications expertise and experience to advise, guide, and influence research partners on the development of strategic plans, objectives, state-of-the-art advances in clinical applications, vendor coordination, and the latest industry developments.


Estimates project time requirements, addresses gaps, participates in feasibility assessments. Prioritizes and manages multiple research projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery

Thorough knowledge of the processes and procedures related to healthcare research. Hands on experience with research interventions, IRB, informed consent, randomization, and grant applications / proposals. Preferred
Thorough knowledge of clinical applications concepts, policies, and practices, including planning, design, development, testing, integrations of software and systems, programming, and training and support methodologies. Required
Excellent analytical and critical-thinking skills, to quickly troubleshoot problems, and develop and apply analytics to identify and implement successful solutions. Required
Excellent communications skills to convey complex information clearly and concisely to all levels of staff and management, with the ability to motivate, influence, and persuade others, and cultivate a strong commitment to efficiency, functionality, and quality customer service. Required
Thorough knowledge of healthcare information technology, medical terminology and leading clinical information systems. In-depth and comprehensive understanding of clinical applications and integration with clinical processes and workflows. Required
Ability to work with senior staff and managers, serving as a technical resource and providing advice and counsel on issues of functionality, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, policy, and performance. Required

Education, Licenses and Certifications:

Bachelor's degree in health care information technology, computer science, or related area, and / or equivalent combination of experience / training. Required
