Job Description
A Virtual Machine Manager supports the ITSS contract by identifying and solving virtual server requirements, operating the vSphere console, utilizing other monitoring tools for a 200 VM Production environment. This individual plays a key role in developing plans for future infrastructure projects. Daily duties include ensuring Windows, Linux and VMware appliances are online, VM hosts performance is nominal and monitoring server Snapshots. On a continuing basis a VM Manager promotes process Improvement, Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) development, problem solving, presenting technical information, quality focus, DNS updates, and enforcing client policies relating to VM operations.
Requirements for a VM Manager on the ITSS contract include the following:
  • BS/MS degree in Computer Science/ Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Proficiency in VMWare Version 5.5 or higher, experience with NSX-6 is a plus
  • Experience using VMWare to support mission critical datacenter applications, vMotion, site migration, disaster recovery
  • Experience with Firewall security principals and concepts
  • Proven understanding of solutions to back-up virtual servers such as Tivoli or Avamar
  • Experience in virtual servers using Windows 2008 and/or Windows 2012 operating systems
  • Experience in analyzing VM host capacity and resource limits
  • Excellent communication skills and being able to work independently or in a team
  • Understand the application of security standards to VM configurations
  • Strong DNS knowledge
Responsibilities for a VM Manager on the ITSS contract include the following:
  • Install new / rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements
  • Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures
  • Provides information by answering questions and requests from developers or Program Managers
  • Maintains quality service by establishing and enforcing organization standards.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; participating in professional societies.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Contribute in all phases of the development lifecycle where databases are involved.
  • Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.
  • Performs feasibility analysis on potential future projects for the client and contract managers.
  • Assists in the evaluation and recommendation of database software packages, application integration and testing tools.
  • Acts as team leader on projects.
