The candidate will perform a variety of routine and non-routine functions directed toward the formulation of new low temperature automotive decorative coatings. These functions include the mixing and spraying of paint, and property testing of resulting coatings, which require handling chemicals, careful weighing and mixing of paint, using automated spraying equipment, performing property measurements on wet paint and baked coatings, gathering data, and recording detailed account of results in an electronic laboratory notebook. Additional responsibilities include: maintaining a clean and safe laboratory, cleaning equipment and disposing waste materials.
The candidate must be willing to work safely with hazardous materials on a daily basis, follow rigorous safety procedures, and wear personal protective equipment including the occasional use of a respirator. The candidate will work closely with a supervisory chemist who will provide specific and detailed instructions regarding formulations and procedures but the successful candidate will themselves be responsible for prioritizing their daily tasks and maximizing productivity. He/she will also be required to work independently and collaborate with chemists, engineers, technical assistants, and/or project leaders.

Experience and Education:
Associate degree in science or engineering related field, or laboratory experience in an industrial chemistry lab. Previous coatings experience is preferred.

Functional and Technical Skills:
Good record keeping
Good mechanical and math skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Must comply with all safety and EH&S procedures
Willingness to learn new equipment and techniques including formulating paint, hand spraying, and testing and evaluating panels
Ability to communicate and write effectively
Willingness to learn and work in a team
