Pre-Production Engineer

General Description:
Uses advanced knowledge of engineering to perform the essential duties and responsibilities as outlined below to coordinate all internal and external activities relating to project launch.  Must have the ability to use independent judgement on matters of significance; with regards to defining process method and monitoring equipment development for product launch.  Additional duties may be assigned.  Work will be accomplished in adherence to all policies set forth by the company.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Performance to Divisional/Departmental Business plan objectives/KPI's:
  • PEM
  • Launch Effectivness (scrap/defects)
  • Capital Budget Cost
  • Missed Shipment (trial events)
  • Utilize TPS Philosophies and Principles to achieve business objectives (Kaizen/Model Cell Activities)
  • Compliance to existing quality systems (i.e. TS and ISO)
  • Technical support to manufacturing for analyzing problem solving and prevention of recurrence activities.
  • Enhance Customer Satisfaction expectations (internal and external)
  • Review customer drawings to assist in development and communicate method, manning, machines and materials to produce parts, using both personal knowledge and assimilated information from various departments.
  • Assist with preparing and maintaining documents per customer quality manual and the master schedule.
  • Assist with controlling external customer required documentation.
  • Primary link between Pre-Production and internal/external the client's suppliers (Divisions) and customers.
  • Responsible for managing the activities/project schedules that include both detailed activities and event milestones that when properly executed will result in a model launch that is on time, produces high quality parts, and at the lowest cost.
  • Reporting to senior management project activities/schedules.
  • Utilize 8step methodology to define problems and implement prevention countermeasures
  • Guide working team in determining matters of significance and alert executive staff in a timely manner to prevent problems from escalating to impact customer events
Minimum Qualifications:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and or ability required.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor degree from a four year college or university in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering: or three to five years related experience and or training: or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Project Management – follow through to meet customer program requirements.
  • Understanding/review of specification for production equipment and process design
  • Process Flow/Capability/Layout/Capacity Analysis
  • Automotive manufacturing experience required
  • Competency in the use of Information Systems Tools to create and maintain business objectives.
  • Toyota Production Systems or related system preferred.
  • TS16949 and ISO14001 experience or related experience preferred
Language skills
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret related technical documents.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with subordinates, peers, and Executives.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to respond to common inquires or complaints from customers, suppliers, and the client personnel
  • Ability to effectively present  information
Mathematical skills
  • Ability to use mathematical concepts as it applies to developing and analyzing data.
Reasoning ability
  • Ability to resolve problems through methodologies such as root cause analysis and countermeasure corrective action.
  • Ability to understand the value of and implement preventative countermeasures to avoid potential problems through the 8-step problem solving methodology.
  • Ability to interpret technical instructions in drawing, mathematical, or diagram form.
  • Ability to distinguish between significant and trivial.
Physical demands, working conditions, and required PPE:
  • Working conditions:  combination of both office area and manufacturing floor.
  • Ability to apply "Go & See” principles as it applies to your Essential duties and Job summary.
  • Travel may be required
  • Ability to address issues and resolve problems under deadline constraints.
