The Primary focus of this position will be the Design & Oversite of the Engineering Department as it relates to Hydraulic Excavator Design and /or Local Design of Special Attachments for the Excavator Product line. Additional Design Engineering duties as described in "Duties & Responsibilities” below. This is a highly visible management position.
Job Description:
The Engineering Manager will Manage and Supervise the work of the Design Engineering Staff in regard to Special Attachments or Options to support the United States Market. The Engineering Manager will be the Liaison between the Local Design Group and the Parent Design Group In Japan.
Duties and Responsibilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or abilities required.
  • Develop and maintain Cost Effective Designs of Options and Attachments for the Hydraulic Excavator product line as driven by sales demand.
  • Identify, evaluate, and recommend changes or improvements in Design, Process, Procedures, and equipment and provide analysis to support these changes, and relay that information back to the Parent Design Group in Japan;
  • Develop budget and capital expenditure plans for the Design Department;
  • Interaction between the Sales & Marketing Managers regarding Design Conception;
  • Create and modify the Bill of Materials for the Production Models in Spartanburg Plant.
  • Must have strong decision making skills;
  • Assist staff in understanding and establishing baseline performance and work standards;
  • Manage and/or participate in project teams to achieve defined objective and deliverables through the use of standardized Company processes;
  • Research, develop and implement cost reduction program; Drive manufacturing cost reduction initiatives to meet production cost targets
  • Support development of lean logistics flow throughout the facility
  • Foster continuous improvement process with leading principles of Safety, Quality, Cost & Delivery.
  • Support operations management to resolve production & quality problems via root cause analysis
  • Assist with the Design of production and assembly fixtures utilizing CAD systems
  • Generate project status reports
  • Support Warrantee Claims investigation, Vendor evaluation as it relates to Product Design.
  • Support Manufacturing with Design Changes generated from Kobelco Japan.

Qualifications/Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree (BS) in Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering (Master's Degree Preferred) or closely related technical field and five to seven years practical experience in a Manufacturing Environment as a Design Engineer (or Engineering Manager).
  • Experience in Design for Manufacturing in the areas of Metal Fabrication, Welding, Assembly and Painting.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing industry practices.
  • Project management experience and strong leadership skills is a plus.
  • Lean manufacturing experience especially in continuous improvement, elimination of waste, 5S, Kaizen events, value stream mapping and visual management is also a plus.
  • Six Sigma knowledge is a plus.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have an intermediate skill level with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • This position requires and intermediate to advanced skill level in CAD (2D & 3D).


Skills and Specifications:
  • Ability to design, develop, implement and improve integrated systems that included systems, people, materials, information, equipment and cost.
  • Capable of performing root cause analysis to determine cause and solutions to various technical Design issues.
  • Maintain high quality standards through on-the-floor interaction with employees to ensure quality and accuracy in each step of the production process.
  • Must possess good organizational ability. Fluent in the English Language with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Japanese Language skills are a plus.
  • Previous Design experience with Hydraulic Excavator Product is highly desired.
  • Must have a team oriented mindset.
  • A self-starter who takes a proactive approach and has good trouble shooting / decision making skills.
  • A self-motivated individual who excels in a challenging environment.
  • Should have a keen eye for detail.
  • The person needs to have the ability to work without direct supervision or little supervision as well.

Supervisor Responsibilities:
  • Lead Design Staff Engineers
  • Lead cross-functional implementation teams
  • Interact with the Design Staff in Japan

Travel Requirement:
  • Must be able to travel with-in and outside of the United States
  • Extended Business trips to Japan (2 weeks or longer) are possible
  • Customer Visits and Vendor / Supplier evaluations
  • Trade Show set-up assistance and participation
  • Support for the Service Department
  • Other Travel deemed necessary to support Product Design.
  • Travel approx. 25% to 40%
