Primary Function: Provides design services to research and/or support staff by participating in the design process from the conceptualization stage through the production stage. Major Responsibilities: Assists research staff in the conceptual and developmental designs for use in connection with Battelle projects. Analyzes engineering proposals and related data to assist in determining the feasibility of proposed designs, prototype fabrication problems and manufacturing problems. Assists research staff in the investigation, procurement of data and calculations required to develop a design and assists in cost estimates. Develops final design in conjunction with design originator. Directs and contributes to the preparation of layout, detail and assembly drawings and geometric visualization. Assures that all engineering drawings and related documents conform to design/drafting standards, design specifications, and configuration management principles. Assists in the selection of materials and components including interaction with vendors and the preparation of purchase orders. Maintains an awareness of, and works in accordance with, the appropriate Quality System (e.g. ISO 9001), and identifies improvements for this system. May have responsibility for the direction of up to 5 staff including other designers, technicians and fabrication personnel. In these situations, the Engineering Designer may direct the fabrication, assembly, testing and development of hardware, direct the detailing, or coordinate design work. Single project focused. Provides graphics and drawings to contribute to project reports and proposals. Maintains appropriate awareness of technological developments in the design field, including CAD, configuration management tools, spreadsheets and components. Accountability: Position Requirements: Minimum three years related experience and Bachelors degree in an appropriate engineering field or an Associate technology degree and 4 years related experience or equivalent. Must have experience in conceptualization design requirements and be able to transform requirements into a feasible design based on both verbal and visual information under moderate supervision. Should have knowledge of types of materials and components required by the design.
