Responsible for the procurement functions directly associated with the Company's needs for direct and indirect materials and services, fixed assets and tooling, and select production materials and services. These products and services are to be secured at cost quality, and delivery competitive levels consistent with Company policy and performance standards.

Essential Functions

  • Initiates purchase orders and amendments for parts, services, and/or special tools; arranges for submission and inspection of sample products as required; close coordination with plant engineering to assure timely execution of product and services sourcing activities.
  • Secures and analyzes quotations; negotiates prices and terms with suppliers; and recommends suppliers with respect to cost, quality, and delivery competitiveness for assigned responsibilities.
  • Works closely with the Vice President of Operations and the Materials Manager to negotiate long term supply agreements with selected suppliers.
  • Works with current suppliers to determine supply capabilities, transportation logistics inventory control and management, negotiates prices and delivery terms with guidance from the Vice President of Operations and the Materials Manager.
  • Coordinates as appropriate, quality matters and engineering changes/developments between company activities and suppliers.
  • Visits suppliers' facilities to assist in the resolution of production, design, quality, and/or delivery problems.
  • Maintains a thorough working knowledge of the company's ERP and cost accounting systems related to Inventory Control, Planning, and Purchasing
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Customer/Supplier Work Relationships

  • Insures necessary communication with Production, Planning, Finance, and Suppliers to meet the Company's business needs.
  • Coordinates with Quality Assurance as necessary to ensure satisfactory Supplier quality performance.
  • Ensures purchased material flow supports the Company's business plan.

Continuous Improvement/Productivity

  • Maintains a consistent focus on improvement of the use of the Company's ERP system to achieve performance and productivity benefits.
  • Continually works toward the reduction of purchased material costs while improving quality and lead times, improving inventory turns and reducing working capital requirements.


Reports to Manager, Materials. Ensures that all work is done in accordance with Customer specifications and Company Policy. Keeps Manager Materials aware of all progress and problems.

Job Qualifications

Physical Requirements

Job requires sitting at a desk doing normal office work, including phone communications and using a computer. Also involves standing and walking in an office and a manufacturing facility.

Environmental / Safety / Time Allocation

  • Spends about 60% of time working at a desk in a normal office environment.
  • Spends about 20% of time on work away from desk, including going out into shop. Must wear eye protection and any other required personal protective equipment while on the shop floor.
  • Spends about 20% of time travelling to Vendor's facilities and on other Company business.

Training / Cross Training / Progression

Trains for Senior Buyer position in accordance with the Operations Department Training Program.

Education / Experience

  • Bachelor's degree with emphasis in business administration, economics, and/or engineering preferred, with five (5) years of progressively responsible purchasing and materials control experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with mechanical / machining buying (castings, forgings, raw materials, molded products, stampings, machining)
  • Experience in a DoD environment a plus.
