Assist engineering and manufacturing operations in the resolution of continuous improvement initiatives and new product launch related machining applications. Work closely with engineering and operations to provide innovative solutions for part machining requirements. Enhance existing machining processes and capabilities that will advance the Company's position in the marketplace.

Employees: No direct reports: Work within functional team environment, may indirectly supervise hourly personnel as required for projects. Responsible for own work. Work closely with engineering, operations, machining technicians, CO-OP or temporary technical employees.

Position requires a 4-year B.S. degree in an engineering, manufacturing or related discipline (or its equivalent in direct working experience). Minimum 5 years related experience with machining process, equipment, and materials. Must possess extensive knowledge of secondary machining operations, i.e., CNC turning, milling, drilling, and grinding in a high volume manufacturing environment. Must be knowledgeable with GD&T with ability to translate part prints specifications into defined machining requirements including G&M code programming. Must possess knowledge of statistical concepts and statistical planning. Experience in the design of tooling, fixtures and workholdings as applied to CNC machining operations.

Works closely with: Manufacturing, Product and Process Engineering, Maintenance and Purchasing Personnel, as well as outside vendors.

  • Work within engineering & various cross-functional teams in design and implementation of machining applications for new launches and part changes. Project management and machining process development of new parts or design changes.
  • Setup and programming of CNC machining equipment in an effective manner.
  • Apply CNC machining engineering principles and practices to Powder Metal Components.
  • Assist in machine run-offs and capability studies. Support customer PPAP requirements.
  • Assist in the resolution of manufacturing problems related to machining processes, automation, and machine control issues.
  • Continuous improvements that looks to optimize the function of machining process, automation and machine control to improve overall plant efficiencies.
  • Estimates production times and related costs to provide information for management decisions.
  • Write maintenance work orders and assist with maintenance as needed to resolve machining equipment issues.
  • Provide expertise with set-up of machines for changeovers and new jobs. Help maintain backups of machine programs and parameters. Modify or write new CNC programs as needed for re-work jobs or new jobs. Look for opportunities to improve cycle time and reduce tool cost. Test, document and implement all changes.
  • Obtain quotes, work with engineering and purchasing to requisition parts, tooling, fixtures, workholdings, or other related components or equipment specified on projects. Monitor consumable tool usage and help manage tooling regrind programs.
  • Train operators and write work instructions. Some time may be required on other shifts – especially when training operators.
  • Organize and maintain tool holders, inserts, out-of-production fixtures, and spare parts for machining equipment.
  • Resolve machining quality problems in collaboration with Quality Assurance and Process Engineering.
  • Monitor and assure compliance to all applicable machine safety requirements and agencies related to job function.
  • Maintain compliance with all Company policies and safety rules.
  • Use appropriate lean tools to track and reduce downtimes.
  • Investigate equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operations, and make recommendations to maintenance crew.
